Understanding Zakat al-Fitr: Rules, Amount & Payment
Fitra (also known as Fitrana, Fitrah, or Zakat al-Fitr) is the obligatory charity that every Muslim must pay before Eid al-Fitr prayer. For 2026, learn exactly what you owe, who it's for, and when to pay to fulfil this essential Ramadan obligation.
Obligatory charity purifying your fast from shortcomings and ensuring the poor can celebrate Eid with dignity.
£5 per person. Pay for yourself and all dependents including spouse, children, and elderly parents.
Before Eid prayer on Friday, 20th March 2026. Pay early to ensure timely distribution.
Fitra, officially known as Zakat al-Fitr or Sadaqat al-Fitr, is an obligatory form of charity that Muslims must pay at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid prayer. The word "Fitra" comes from the Arabic root meaning "nature" or "creation"—it relates to the fitrah (innate nature) that is purified through this act of charity.
Ibn Umar (RA) narrated: "The Prophet ﷺ made obligatory Sadaqat al-Fitr (Zakat al-Fitr) as a sa' of dates or a sa' of barley, on the slave and the free, male and female, young and old among the Muslims." (Bukhari)
Ibn Abbas (RA) explained the wisdom behind Fitra: "The Prophet ﷺ ordained Zakat al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle speech and obscene talk, and as food for the poor." (Abu Dawud)
Even with the best intentions, we inevitably fall short during Ramadan—perhaps through careless words, moments of impatience, or lapses in concentration during worship. Fitra cleanses our fast from these imperfections, ensuring our Ramadan is accepted in its best possible form.
Eid should be a day of universal celebration. By paying Fitra, we ensure that even the poorest members of our community have food to eat on Eid day. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Enrich them on this day." No one should go hungry while others feast.
The amount of Fitra is one sa' of staple food—approximately 2.5-3 kilograms of wheat, barley, dates, raisins, or rice. In monetary terms:
2026 Rate: £5 per person (minimum)
| Family Size | Fitra Due |
|---|---|
| Single person | £5 |
| Couple | £10 |
| Family of 3 | £15 |
| Family of 4 | £20 |
| Family of 5 | £25 |
| Family of 6 | £30 |
Fitra is obligatory on every Muslim who has food exceeding their needs and their dependents' needs for Eid day. This low threshold means virtually every Muslim should pay.
Deadline: Before Eid prayer on Friday, 20th March 2026
If Fitra is paid after the Eid prayer, it loses its special status as Zakat al-Fitr and becomes ordinary sadaqah (voluntary charity). While still rewarding, it doesn't fulfil the specific obligation.
Paying early ensures charities have time to purchase and distribute food to recipients before Eid.
