Learn the Authentic Supplications for Bedtime with Arabic Text & Benefits
The dua before sleep is a powerful supplication that protects you through the night and ensures you wake in remembrance of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us several beautiful prayers to recite before sleeping. This comprehensive guide covers all the authentic duas, their meanings, and the immense rewards of this nightly practice.
بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Transliteration: Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya
Translation: "In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live"
Sleep in Islam is likened to a minor death, where the soul is taken by Allah and returned upon waking. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Sleep is the brother of death." This profound connection means that going to sleep with the remembrance of Allah is essential.
The dua "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya" acknowledges this reality. By saying "In Your name I die and I live," we recognise that both sleep and death are in Allah's hands.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught several supplications for bedtime:
Ayatul Kursi (2:255): Provides divine protection throughout the night. The Prophet said whoever recites it before sleeping will have a guardian appointed by Allah.
The Three Quls: Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas - blown into cupped hands and wiped over the body three times.
Last Two Verses of Al-Baqarah: "Whoever recites these at night, they will suffice him."
The bedtime duas should be incorporated into a complete nighttime routine:
After Wudu: The Prophet recommended performing wudu before sleeping, even if already in a state of purity.
Lying on Your Right Side: The Sunnah is to lie on your right side when going to sleep.
Dust Off the Bed: Brush off the bed three times with your garment, saying "Bismillah."
Recite the Three Quls: Cup your hands, blow into them after reciting, then wipe over your body.
Recite Ayatul Kursi: For protection throughout the night.
Final Supplication: Conclude with "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya."
The bedtime supplications carry tremendous rewards:
Protection from Shaytan: The Prophet said that reciting Ayatul Kursi before sleep provides a guardian from Allah, and Satan cannot approach until morning.
Dying in a State of Fitrah: If Allah decrees that you do not wake, you will have died with His name on your lips - a blessed ending.
Peaceful Sleep: Many Muslims report more restful, peaceful sleep when they maintain the Sunnah of bedtime duas.
Waking with Remembrance: When you sleep with Allah's name, you are more likely to wake with His remembrance.
Protection from Nightmares: The bedtime adhkar provide protection from disturbing dreams.
Making the bedtime duas a consistent habit:
Start with the Essentials: Begin with "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya" and Ayatul Kursi. Add more gradually.
Keep a Dua Card by Your Bed: Until you've memorised the duas, keep a reference nearby.
Set a Phone Reminder: A nightly reminder at bedtime can prompt your routine.
Make Wudu Part of Your Routine: Even if you've already prayed Isha, perform fresh wudu before bed.
Involve Your Family: Teach children the bedtime duas and recite together.
Avoid Screens Before Bed: Put away phones and devices before starting your duas.
Whatever you manage to recite will still bring reward. Over time, the routine will become faster and more natural.
