Learn the Authentic Islamic Prayer Before Eating with Arabic & Benefits
The dua before eating is a beautiful Sunnah that transforms every meal into an act of worship. By remembering Allah before we eat, we acknowledge His blessings and seek barakah in our food. This comprehensive guide teaches you the authentic dua with proper pronunciation and explains its profound spiritual significance.
بِسْمِ اللهِ
Transliteration: Bismillah
Translation: "In the name of Allah"
The dua before eating is one of the simplest yet most profound supplications in Islam. By saying "Bismillah" before meals, Muslims invoke the name of Allah and acknowledge that all sustenance comes from Him alone. This brief supplication carries immense spiritual weight and has been practised by Muslims since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When any of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, let him say: Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end)." (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)
While "Bismillah" is sufficient, there is also a longer version that some Muslims prefer to recite:
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ بِسْمِ اللهِ
Transliteration: Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina 'adhaban-nar, Bismillah
Translation: "O Allah, bless us in what You have provided for us and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. In the name of Allah."
This extended version adds a prayer for blessing in the food and protection from the Hellfire, making it an even more comprehensive supplication before eating.
The dua before eating should be recited at specific times and in a particular manner to follow the Sunnah correctly:
Before Every Meal: Whether you are eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a small snack, begin with Bismillah. This applies to all food and drinks, not just main meals. Even when eating a single date or drinking water, the Sunnah is to begin with Allah's name.
At the Start of Eating: Say the dua just before you take your first bite. If you are at a gathering, it is not necessary to say it loudly - you may recite it quietly to yourself.
If You Forget: If you forget to say Bismillah at the beginning, say "Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi" (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end) as soon as you remember. This covers the entire meal with Allah's blessing.
Eating with the Right Hand: Along with saying Bismillah, the Sunnah is to eat with your right hand and from what is nearest to you on the plate. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed: "Mention Allah's name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you."
When Eating with Others: Each person should say their own Bismillah. There is no requirement for one person to say it on behalf of the group, though teaching children and reminding others is encouraged.
The simple act of saying Bismillah before eating carries numerous spiritual and practical benefits:
Protection from Shaytan: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a man enters his house and mentions Allah when he enters and when he eats, the Shaytan says: 'You have no place to stay and no dinner.' But if he enters and does not mention Allah when entering, the Shaytan says: 'You have found a place to stay.' And if he does not mention Allah when he eats, he says: 'You have found a place to stay and dinner.'" (Muslim)
Barakah in Food: When we invoke Allah's name over our food, we invite His blessing into the meal. This barakah can manifest as increased satisfaction from smaller portions and greater spiritual benefit from the sustenance.
Gratitude and Mindfulness: In our fast-paced world, we often eat mindlessly. Saying Bismillah creates a moment of pause that reminds us of Allah's countless blessings.
Transformation of Eating into Worship: An ordinary act of eating becomes an act of worship when accompanied by the remembrance of Allah.
Following the Sunnah: By practising this simple Sunnah, we align ourselves with the way of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and earn rewards for following his example.
Developing the habit of saying Bismillah before every meal requires conscious effort at first, but soon becomes second nature:
Set Visual Reminders: Place small cards or stickers with "Bismillah" written on them in your kitchen, dining area, and lunchbox.
Pause Before Eating: Train yourself to pause for a moment before picking up food. Use this brief pause to recite Bismillah with presence of mind.
Involve Family Members: Make it a family practice to say Bismillah together before meals. When eating as a family, have one person remind everyone.
Connect it to Handwashing: Since washing hands before eating is also Sunnah, use the act of sitting down after washing as a trigger to say Bismillah.
Be Patient with Forgetfulness: If you forget, don't be discouraged. Simply say the extended version when you remember.
Extend to Drinks and Snacks: Remember that Bismillah applies to everything you consume, not just formal meals.
Reflect on the Meaning: Understanding that you are invoking the name of the Creator before nourishing your body adds depth to the practice.
If you forget to say Bismillah at the beginning of your meal, say "Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi" (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end) as soon as you remember.
No, you only need to say Bismillah once at the beginning of your meal. However, if you take a significant break during eating and then return to continue, it is recommended to say Bismillah again.
Both are acceptable. When eating alone or with family, you may say it at a normal volume. In public settings, it is fine to say Bismillah quietly to yourself.
Yes, the Sunnah is to say Bismillah before drinking anything, including water, tea, coffee, juice, or any beverage. After drinking, say Alhamdulillah.
"Bismillah" alone is sufficient and was the common practice of the Prophet. The longer version adds prayers for blessing and protection, which is additional virtue but not obligatory.
While it is best to say "Bismillah" in Arabic as taught by the Prophet, saying "In the name of Allah" in your language is also acceptable, especially when learning.
The dua before eating is part of a comprehensive set of Islamic eating etiquettes:
Wash Hands Before Eating: Cleanliness is half of faith, and washing hands before meals is both hygienic and spiritually recommended.
Eat with the Right Hand: The Prophet (peace be upon him) specifically instructed Muslims to eat and drink with the right hand.
Eat from What is Nearest: When sharing a plate, take food from the portion closest to you rather than reaching across.
Don't Criticise Food: The Prophet (peace be upon him) never criticised any food. If he liked it, he ate it; if not, he simply left it without comment.
Don't Eat While Reclining: Sitting upright while eating is the Sunnah and is better for digestion.
Say Alhamdulillah After Eating: Complete your meal with the dua after eating, thanking Allah for the sustenance.
