True Meaning of Qurbani

Qurbani is a sunnah of Ibrahim (AS). It is a test of piety:

“It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him.” (Quran 32:37)

The test is one that should cause some discomfort. With Ibrahim (AS), this discomfort was felt through making repeated sacrifices of red camels as a possible exchange for his son Ismael and ultimately being prepared to sacrifice his son for Allah (SWT).

In countries where Qurbanis are performed, this discomfort is felt by the locals through their purchase of a qurbani animal and having to look after it, tending to its needs, with love and kindness, weeks before the sacrifice takes place.

In the West, this discomfort is felt through making a financial sacrifice that is not easy. This means we do more than just the minimum one qurbani. What is a Qurbani donation?

A single Qurbani donation is one share. This provides approximately 57 nutritious meals, and supply protein-filled meat to children and their families.

What does the act of Qurbani signify?

Qurbani honours the tradition established by the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his beloved son Ismail (AS). It demonstrates our devotion to Allah as exemplified through their story of sacrifice.

We called to him, “O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision. Indeed, we thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was a clear trial.” -The Holy Qur’an 37:104

Qurbani is the sacrifice of sheep, goats, and cattle between the tenth and twelfth days of Dhul Hijjah as commanded by Allah (SWT). It takes place in the final month of the Islamic calendar during the days of Eid-al-Adha.

Who is Qurbani Compulsory for?

According to many scholars, Qurbani is an obligation for all Muslims whose wealth reaches the Zakat threshold.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “For every hair of the Qurbani, you receive a reward from Allah (SWT)” (Tirmidhi)

Donating Qurbani is a very rewardable action. The most important part of giving Qurbani is the intention: it must be given humbly with God-consciousness (Taqwa).

When is Qurbani?

It is advisable to donate as early as possible to ensure there is enough time for allocation and preparation.

The time for physically offering the sacrifice begins after the Eid prayer on Eid-al-Adha, which this year is expected to be Friday 6th of June, and ends when the sun sets on the thirteenth of Dhu’l-Hijjah.

There are three days of sacrifice: the day of Eid-al-Adha and the two days after it.
