Zakat al-Fitr, also known as Zakat ul-Fitr, Fitrana, Fitra, or Sadaqat al-Fitr, is an obligatory charity given at the end of Ramadan before Eid prayer. It purifies the fasting person from any shortcomings during Ramadan and provides food for the needy so they can celebrate Eid.
Zakat al-Fitr and Fitrana are the same thing – just different names used by different communities. Other common names include Zakat ul-Fitr, Fitra, Fitrah, and Sadaqat al-Fitr. All refer to the obligatory charity paid before Eid al-Fitr prayers.
The amount for Zakat al-Fitr is £6 per person. This is based on the cost of one sa’ (approximately 2.5kg) of staple food. The amount should be paid for every member of your household, including children, the elderly, and dependants.
Yes, Zakat al-Fitr is Wajib (obligatory) according to all major schools of Islamic jurisprudence. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made Zakat ul-Fitr obligatory as a means of purifying the fasting person and feeding the poor.
Sadaqat al-Fitr must be paid before Eid al-Fitr prayer. While it can be given any time during Ramadan, we recommend paying early (by the 27th night) to ensure your Fitra reaches those in need before Eid. Paying after Eid prayer counts as regular Sadaqah, not Zakat al-Fitr.
Every Muslim who has food in excess of their needs must pay Zakat al-Fitr. Unlike Zakat al-Maal, there is no Nisab threshold – even those with modest means should pay Fitrana. Parents pay on behalf of their children, and household heads pay for dependants.
No. Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is a fixed amount per person paid before Eid, regardless of wealth. Zakat al-Maal is 2.5% of savings above Nisab, payable once a year. Both are obligatory but serve different purposes and have different rules.
